It is always a pleasure to meet other people who swim, bike and run. But I also welcome the opportunity to meet other people who may only swim, bike or run or engage in some combination, but not all three disciplines. When I mention to others that they should consider a triathlon, I am often met with feelings of uncertainty. The most frequent reason shared is not being quite ready to combine all three — swim, bike and run. Often times, it is the swim most are not ready for out of the three. People often ask me about my introduction to the sport. And I often have to break it to them that there is no magical story. You Can Tri Too. Although I must admit, a magical story would be pretty cool to tell.
So as the magical story goes, the run was my first discipline. Over the years, I participated in a couple of marathons and several half marathons and ten milers. However, it was not until the 2008 Cherry Blossom Ten Miler when I met a friend of a friend who was also a member of the DC Triathlon Club that I learned more about triathlons. We talked a bit, but I was not quite sold. However, I definitely wanted to pick up another sport. So later that month, I decided to purchase my first bike and started to ride and enjoyed it a lot. The very next year, that friend eventually became my friend and we talked about our race schedule for the year. He asked me if I would consider a triathlon and recommended the DC Triathlon Club New Triathlete Program (NTP). A swimmer I was not. But with the help of NTP coaches and mentors, I completed an Olympic distance for my first ever triathlon. My second triathlon took place a couple of months later — a Sprint distance. My second year, I completed a Sprint, Olympic and my first Half Ironman distance triathlon.
After some time off, I realized that I missed the sport and the diversity of training for all three disciplines. Now, I am currently training for my first ironman scheduled for this August 2013. So if you are new to triathlons or are considering signing up for one, we all have to start somewhere. Make your own magical story. And before you know it, you will be tackling your first ironman. If I can, You Can Tri Too.
